Nine staff members from James Terry Court, in South Croydon, are in high spirits after completing a memory walk to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society.
The willing team put on their walking shoes and printed signs, which they wore on the day as a reminder of who they were walking for, including family members, friends and residents at the care home on Haling Park Road. They travelled through Purley and received many hoots from people cheering them along from their cars. They were also met by one of the teammate’s brother, who cheered them on and gave them oranges and sweets to help keep up their energy.
The event was organised by the Home’s wellbeing champions, who were inspired by a staff member who had completed Trek13, a 13-mile scenic hike for Alzheimer’s Society, earlier this year. They put up posters to recruit walkers, which helped to raise over £1,000 for the dementia charity.
One of the walkers, Louise Daley, said:
I decided to join the walk in honour of my late mother-in-law who had this debilitating disease that took so much from her. She was an intelligent, funny and strong willed lady.
Louise’s family were touched by her gesture to walk in memory of her grandmother, whilst raising funds for the cause.
I also honoured the grandmother and great aunt of two of my very close friends, as this disease affects so many people and their families,
added Louise.
According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, an estimated 1.4 million people in the UK will have dementia by 2040 and this is expected to increase to two million by 2050.
