Prince George Duke of Kent Court’s resident celebrates her 102nd birthday

A resident at Prince George Duke of Kent Court, in Chislehurst, has celebrated her 102nd birthday.

Betty Connor, enjoyed a celebration with fellow residents, staff and family members at the Home, along with gifts and a birthday cake. Staff also arranged for an owl visit at the Home for Betty and she met with several owls including a barn owl, giant grey owl and brown owl, courtesy of Paul Green from Sky Birds of Preys in Southborough, Kent.

Betty was born on 30 December 1920 in Woolwich and was one of seven children. During World War II, Betty worked in an office as a typist.

She married her husband Charles in September 1946. They met at a cycling club in Woolwich and they were keen cyclists throughout their lives, attending many rallies across the South East. The couple started their married life living with Charles’s parents, before moving to Peckham and finally settling in to their family home in Eltham.

Betty went on to have seven children of her own; five boys and two girls, who were all delivered by caesarean section. Thankfully Betty was in good hands as she said she shared the same obstetrician as the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Whilst raising her family, Betty worked as a childminder. She was also a talented cake maker and baked beautiful crafted wedding cakes for her family and friends.

Betty also enjoyed knitting, crochet and embroidery and would present handcrafted embroidered bed covers and sheets with a theme and family name whenever a wedding was taking place.

Both Betty’s parents lived long lives and Betty says she was determined to beat them. Oh and her secret to a long healthy life? Betty says:

Keeping busy both in body and mind …. along with a glass of Baileys.

Prince George Duke of Kent Court Activities Coordinator, Diane Connor, says:

Betty is a fantastic person and a brilliant character to have at our Home. She has remained active throughout her life and there are many valuable lessons we can take away from Betty. It’s a real honour to share this milestone birthday with her.
