Residents at Shannon Court, in Surrey, have recently enjoyed a day trip to Petersfield Lake, in Hampshire. Accompanied by the Home’s staff, the residents were able to witness a swan family swimming around as well as Egyptian geese, which they had never seen before. They also enjoyed playing with dogs, who came by with their owners.
Resident Brenda says:
We also saw little children eating ice-cream and feeding the birds. What a marvellous day!
Spending time in nature can have many benefits for older people. Moderate exposure to sunlight help their bodies make vitamin D, which helps boost the immune system. They are also able to unwind by taking in the leafy scenery and enjoying the presence of wildlife. Residents with breathing difficulties may also feel more comfortable in the countryside, as it’s easier for their lungs to absorb oxygen when surrounded by plants.
The benefits for their mental health are also obvious. “These trips always spark some reminiscing,” says Kata Beauchemin, one of the Activities Coordinators.
It helps the residents bring back memories from their countryside trip days when they were younger, which is wonderful for their mental health and wellbeing.
