To raise awareness on the importance of birds for the environment, residents at James Terry Court, in South Croydon, have recently enjoyed a friendly visit from, Eki (also known as Kokoshko), a friendly green parrot. The residents were delighted to meet the affectionate animal, who was happy to be petted and stroked. Senior Carer Veronika led the parrot all around the Home’s grounds and introduced them to the residents.
The residents learned fascinating facts about birds. For example, birds are crucial for the environment because they aid in pollination, seed dispersal, pest control, and nutrient cycling, which helps to maintain ecosystem balance and biodiversity.
“Parrots are particularly interesting,” added staff member Veronika. “They have a surprisingly long lifespan. Most parrot species have an average lifespan of 30 years, and some species can live up to 80 years or more!”
Taking part in this activity, resident Pat said:
This is fantastic. It reminds me of when I was young and had pets!
Resident Eunice added:
I really loved feeding the parrot. It’s such a calming experience.
Senior Carer Veronika said:
It was really heart-warming to see the residents’ faces light up when the parrot came around and into the garden! They brought joy and calmness to our residents, which is wonderful for their mental health and wellbeing.
Also, they were able to get very close and feel the animal’s feathers, and this was a particularly joyful experience for residents with visual problems.
The residents said they are looking forward to their next visit to James Terry Court, in South Croydon.
