A resident at Cornwallis Court, in Bury St Edmunds, has celebrated her 102nd birthday.
To mark the special event, Jean Wood was reunited with her three sons and enjoyed a meal out with them. She also received visits from family and friends, and held video calls with loved ones living in Australia and Canada.
I didn’t want too much fuss, but this is all marvellous!
said Jean.
Jean was born on 14 July 1920 in London, where she lived until her late 20s. She was the youngest of four children.
After a whirlwind romance, Jean got married in 1941. After the war, she and her husband lived in Cambridge for several years and settled in Letchworth. They had three sons, Roger, Stephen and John.
Jean recalls her first job working at a shop in St Paul’s, London, for a wage of £1.50 a week.
I had to commute to work so I could only afford 10p a day for my lunch!
said Jean.
Jean has lived at Cornwallis Court care home for 10 years and enjoys socialising with other residents. She likes painting, crafts, knitting, and making things to sell and raise funds for resident activities or for charity.
Cornwallis Court Activities Coordinators, Emma and Sam, said:
Jean is a wonderful person and is very much part of the family at Cornwallis Court. Sadly, she wasn’t able to see her sons for her last birthday due to the national lockdown, so this birthday has been extra special for Jean and we’re thrilled for her!
What’s Jean’s secret to a long life?
Goodness knows,
she exclaimed.
I guess it is due to me keeping busy and always learning something new!
