Nine of our Homes have a dedicated nursing service, which is ideal for residents who require 24 hour support from a Registered Nurse.

Our nurses have an extremely important role within our nursing Homes. We invest in their training and wellbeing to ensure they possess the clinical and management skills needed to care for our nursing residents. Our nurses are fully trained to deliver a specialist level of support for the residents within their care.

Nursing at RMBI Care Co.

My parents were able to come here to live despite both having very different care needs – one has excellent nursing care and the other excellent dementia care. Staff are all caring and committed to their work.

Our Registered Nurses play a vital role in supporting our residents that require nursing care. All our nurses receive comprehensive management and technical training, enabling them to lead teams in our Homes. They also receive an enhanced range of benefits while working with us.

Whether they have years of experience or have recently qualified, RMBI Care Co. Homes are the perfect place to help Registered Nurses develop their professional skills, become leaders in care and make a real difference to our residents’ daily lives.

When new nurses join one of our Homes, they receive a comprehensive and personalised induction with their own ‘buddy,’ to ensure they get the best start as they join our organisation. They receive extensive regular training and refresher training to keep their skills up to date and develop new ones where needed. This allows them to promote the health and wellbeing of our residents with more complex care or health needs.

Our National Clinical Governance Lead also provides our nursing professionals with clinical support and hosts regular nursing forums, to ensure our nurses are fully supported and remain engaged as part of our clinical team.

Emily Starkey: Clinical Lead at Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court

The staff, residents and relatives have such a close bond that it really does feel like a second family. This gives me the daily encouragement to support the staff in providing the best care for our residents.

Emily started as a carer at Lord Harris Court (now Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court) in Berkshire, before deciding to become a nurse.

While still working with us once a week, she studied at the University of West London and qualified with First Class Honours in Mental Health Nursing in 2018.

She went on to become a full time nurse at Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court, where she has since been promoted to Clinical Lead.

The help I got when I first qualified from the Clinical Lead at Lord Harris Court and RMBI Care Co. was fantastic. The training courses for the nurses are very beneficial to develop your skills, especially when you’re new in the job role.

As the Clinical Lead, Emily leads the nursing team with management and guidance to ensure that clinical practices across the Home are in line with NMC and CQC. She also conducts a wide range of activities, including writing and auditing of care plans, reordering of medication, conducting supervisions and appraisals of those working in the nursing service, and identifying training and development needs. Most importantly, she checks in with the residents regularly to make sure that the clinical staff are fulfilling their needs to the highest standards.

Emily enjoys managing her dedicated nursing team, which is fully qualified thanks to RMBI Care Co.’s clinical training programme. This comprehensive training includes phlebotomy, catheterisation, insulin and diabetes management, suctioning and nebulisers, wound management, first aid and CPR to name a few. For newly qualified nurses, these valuable courses can give them the confidence boost they may need when starting their careers.

The opportunities that RMBI Care Co. has offered me are endless: training to drive the mini bus to take residents to trips, all my clinical and mandatory training, a leadership and management programme. Also, I recently did a mental health first aid course that enables me to be a mental health first aider at work.

In addition to all these training opportunities and numerous benefits (such as having RMBI Care Co. reimbursing her Nursing and Midwifery Council annual fee), Emily receives constant support from Jordi, our National Clinical Governance Lead, as well as from others in our National and Regional management teams.

Meet Jordi Sirera: our National Clinical Governance Lead

I’m proud to work at RMBI Care Co. and I want all our nurses to feel supported and grow professionally together.

Jordi wears a nurse uniform and looks at the camera. He has long hair and a beard.

A highly dedicated specialist with experience in Social Care and Care for Older People, Jordi joined RMBI Care Co. in April 2016. He started as a Registered Nurse at one of our Homes and, just a few months later, was promoted to Deputy Clinical Manager.

Today, Jordi supports all our Registered Nurses, both strategically and at Home level. He ensures that our nurses acquire professional competencies and are efficiently supported.

Jordi conducts clinical audits regularly and scopes new nursing services and management of clinical risks. As well as his commitment to delivering safe and effective care to our residents, he has been pivotal in supporting our nursing staff during the Covid-19 crisis.

In 2023, Jordi achieved the prestigious title of Queen’s Nurse by The Queen’s Nursing Institute. The Queen’s Nursing Institute is a registered charity dedicated to improving the nursing care of people in their own homes and communities. You can read the story here.

Our nursing environments

We are continuously working to improve the environment in our Homes to support our residents’ changing health needs and the clinical staff that care for them. Many of our Homes have transformed their nursing services and purchased digital equipment, supported by the community of Freemasons and our Homes’ Association of Friends. Here are just a few of the unique nursing areas that feature within some of our Homes.

What is nursing dementia care?

If your loved one lives with dementia and has additional nursing needs, we may be able to support them. Nursing dementia care provides support for those residents living with dementia, delivered by registered nurses with dementia experience. Subject to assessment, a resident that requires nursing dementia care will have a diagnosis of dementia as well as physical nursing needs.

Our goals for nursing a person with dementia

We build on the strengths and capabilities of each individual, meeting the unique circumstances, background and preferences of the resident and their loved ones. Our goals for caring for a person with dementia include:

  • Developing a relationship with the resident based on empathy and trust
  • Supporting high standards of clinical care
  • Providing a flexible and familiar environment that supports the resident
  • Maintaining a safe environment for the resident, their loved ones and the staff members
  • Promoting the resident’s engagement with their social and support network
  • Ensuring effective collaboration with other relevant service providers.

The admission process

Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court, in Berkshire, provides nursing dementia care.

Our management and nursing teams will fully assess the person’s dementia needs, taking into consideration their care requirements and the house group as a whole. In order for a placement to be offered, the person must have a formal diagnosis of dementia as well as identified physical nursing needs.

Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court, in Berkshire, is currently the only RMBI Care Co. Home that provides nursing dementia care. However, we are working to establish this type of care in other RMBI Care Co. Homes in the future.

Contact the Home management team on 01189 787 496 or email princephilip@rmbi.care for more information.
