Inspired Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court residents create masterpiece to commemorate King Charles’ coronation

Three residents at Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court, in Berkshire, have recently created a work of art to commemorate King Charles III’s coronation. Wendy, Gladys and Angela, who are members of the Home’s Textiles Group, decided to take on the challenge of creating something modern and unique. Inspired by the impressionist French artist Henri Matisse and his vivid use of colour, the three residents made a colourful masterpiece for everyone to enjoy.

Keeping in mind King Charles’ passion for the environment, the residents only used fabrics, remnants and threads they had in their fabric stock to minimise their carbon footprint. The design was inspired by a stained glass window, and the crown embroidery taken on by resident Gladys incorporates the official crown design from Buckingham Palace.

Resident Wendy said:

I enjoyed the time stitching this embroidery for the Coronation. It certainly was a challenge.

Resident Gladys added:

Time passed easily doing this. I am so very pleased with the outcome. It looks so nice in the frame!

Sharon Fletcher, one of the Home’s Activities Coordinators, encouraged the residents to explore their creatitivy to support their wellbeing. She said:

This has been our biggest project yet. I am so proud of Wendy, Gladys and Angela for persevering, working together and enjoying the time spent on this.

Residents Angela and Wendy add the final touches before presenting their masterpiece.

Resident Angela said:

It was a lot of work to put it all together, but it looks so brilliant and new compared to any other celebration piece. We like to be different!

Activities Coordinator Sharon Fletcher elaborated on the process. She said:

The simplicity of the design and the clear definitions of the blocks and natural shapes were an integral element of the design success.

These shapes are very intricate! The skills and commitment of the team resulted in Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court’s very own Official Commemorative Piece.
