Visually impaired resident from Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court burns up the dance floor

Dancing can have many benefits for older people, according to research conducted by the University of Leeds. Regular dance sessions can improve mobility, reduce anxiety and boost overall wellbeing. Michael, a visually impaired resident living at Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh Court, in Wokingham (Berkshire), decided that his condition would not prevent him from enjoying such benefits.
With support from Sharon, one of the Home’s Activities Coordinators, he has recently enjoyed an exciting ballroom dance lesson. The lesson was run by Berkshire Vision, a charity that provides support and activities to visually impaired people in Berkshire.
Resident Michael dances cheek to cheek with Sharon, one of the Home’s Activities Coordinators, who supported him throughout the activity.
Michael, who is now 81, says:
I had a fantastic time, learning many new steps and dances. Keeping fit, having fun and talking to people in a similar situation does make wonders!
Activities Coordinator Sharon adds:
These classes have given Michael confidence, and he now looks forward to getting out and about, particularly at the dance studio. Strictly, watch out – here we come!

This is not the first time that resident Michael has shown his physical prowess. In August 2022, he completed a 22-mile sponsored walk for Sport Relief – Move 22, a Comic Relief initiative. Supported in his daily walks by Activities Coordinator Sharon, Michael raised over £200 to support mental health, tackle inequality, and help young people thrive.
