Scarbrough Court resident celebrates 100th birthday

A resident at Scarbrough Court, in Cramlington, Northumberland has celebrated his 100th birthday.

Edward Curry (known as Eddy) enjoyed a celebration with fellow residents and staff at the Home, along with gifts, a birthday cake, and a personal card from the Queen. In the afternoon, Eddy continued the birthday celebration at his family’s home with some lifelong friends and neighbours.

Eddy was born in August 1922 in Newcastle, where he spent many years before being called up to service at the age of 18.

Eddy had two brothers who were already serving in the Royal Navy, and decided to join the same core. His main role was in the Intelligence Division, mainly decrypting Japanese Morse code, known as a ‘Y Operator’. He served a total of six years in the Royal Navy, where he spent one year in Kenya and three years in Sri Lanka.

After Eddy left the Royal Navy, he had a long career in the brewery industry in Newcastle, working in the clerical and managerial division.

When Eddy was discharged from his service, he met his future wife Irene, who was being relieved from the Woman’s Air Force, on the bus home. They became husband and wife in 1947 and were happily married for 63 years.

Sadly, Irene passed away in 2010, and Eddy says that Irene is a huge miss as he loved her dearly. They were blessed with two girls, Aileen and Libby, and also blessed with grandchildren and now a great-grandchildren.

Eddy is very contented living at Scarbrough Court. He says:

The staff here are out of this world; they are wonderful, calm and nothing is a problem. I am very grateful for what everyone does for me.

Reflecting on this milestone birthday, Eddy would like to share his wisdom with the younger generation.
