There were smiles all around at James Terry Court as resident Josie Winter celebrated her 100th birthday last weekend. She was surrounded by family, friends, fellow residents and staff at the care home in South Croydon.

Born on 31 October 1925, Josie grew up during a time of great change. During the Second World War, she worked as a shorthand typist in an office before being evacuated with her family to Wales, where she continued her vital work supporting the war effort. It was there that she met her future husband, Harry, and the pair later married in 1950, five years after the end of the war.

Reflecting on her milestone birthday, Josie shares her secret to a long and happy life:

Always look on the bright side of life! I believe in being optimistic, staying calm and having a happy nature. What is the point of being miserable?

To mark the special occasion, the staff at James Terry Court hosted a lively celebration filled with music and laughter. Entertainment was provided by a local group, the Barbershop Singers, whose performance had everyone tapping their toes and singing along.

Diane Rumsby, Home Manager at James Terry Court, says:

It was a privilege to celebrate such an important milestone with Josie. She’s a joyful and uplifting presence at the Home.
