Devonshire Court resident goes the extra mile to raise money for Breast Cancer UK

A 94 year old resident at Devonshire Court, in Oadby, Leicester, has clocked up over 44 miles on a specially adapted tandem bike, and by himself in his wheelchair, to help raise funds for Breast Cancer UK.

Resident Derick Marston, who uses a wheelchair and is registered blind, loves being active, and was enthusiastic to take part in the Home’s fundraising challenge ‘Coastbuster 1000 Challenge’.

Kind members of staff came up with the fundraising challenge after their Home Manager Juliet O’Connor was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. So far, the Home has raised £1240 with support from other residents and staff, surpassing their target of £500.

Since the pandemic started, staff have worked tirelessly to ensure residents continue to exercise and keep active in the Home, their gardens and outdoor spaces.

Activities Coordinator, Claire Barrett, said:

The tandem bike has been a great way for our residents to be more active in a safe, supported environment. Having the fundraising target has also proven to be a great incentive for everyone to go that extra mile!
