An invigorating seaside trip for Cornwallis Court residents

A little vitamin D and some cool fresh air can work wonders for the body and mind. Residents from Cornwallis Court, in Bury St Edmunds (Suffolk), can attest to that as they recently enjoyed a visit to the beach.

Accompanied by the Home’s Activities Coordinators, residents, family members and staff boarded a coach heading for Felixstowe. The charming seaside town is known for being the largest container port in England, handling more than four million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) every year and over 2,000 ships.

Residents were able to relax and unwind, and share their own experiences of visits to the seaside when they were younger. Some of the residents and staff members that were brave enough even dipped their toes in the sea, and felt the wet sand between their toes.

“The sun shone brightly and the sea was cool,” says Emma Gibson, Activities Coordinators at Cornwallis Court. She adds:

The fish and chips were devoured and there were great big smiles on everyone’s faces.

Resident David said:

It was absolutely brilliant! All the residents were really looking forward to it. The staff were excellent. It did not disappoint!

Spending time at the beach can have many benefits for older people. Moderate exposure to sunlight helps our bodies make vitamin D, which boosts the immune system. It also gives people the opportunity to unwind by taking in the scenery and hearing the rhythmic sound of the waves.
