While dogs and cats are the most common therapy pets, other small animals like rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs can also be employed for their amazing calming and therapeutic effects. These animals can positively support older people’s physical and mental well-being, making them great companions.
Residents at Prince George Duke of Kent Court, in Chislehurst have enjoyed a friendly visit from a wide range of friendly creatures, including Diego the dancing Chihuahua, a puppy, a rag doll cat, guinea pigs, rabbit, a Syrian hamster, a tortoise, and Jeff, a cockerel.

Taking part in this activity, resident John was bemused when he held a tortoise for the first time. He commented:
He was so friendly and gentle. His shell had interesting patterns and felt very cool when I stroked him.
Resident Gill was delighted to meet Jeff, the friendliest cockerel. She said:
Jeff was so happy to perch himself on my walker, and to be stroked by everyone.
The benefits of spending time with animals for older people are immense. Research has shown that having something to pet or touch can result in lower blood pressure, better heart rate and reduced stress. Pets can provide emotional stability during stressful situations, helping to reduce anxiety and depression.
Kelli, one of Prince George Duke of Kent Court’s Activities Coordinators, said:
The residents and staff absolutely love animals so we wanted to organise a mini petting zoo day. There was an array of different pets so there was something for everyone to enjoy. It was a lovely afternoon with so many happy faces.
